ebook concept: Advice You Would Give to someone on how to start with Social Media

Hello everyone,

For those who were not in attendance at our breakfast meeting this morning, one of the areas that we discussed was thought leadership. We decided to tackle this in the creation of an ebook on the topic of "Advice that you would give someone on how to get started with social media."
We are hoping to secure submissions from the various members of the group. Each submission would only have to be between one or two pages. Once we have all of the submissions, we will compile all of the info, and make it available to the masses.

So for those burgeoning authors out there, get your head out of the boo-berries and start writing. Please send me your submissions by October 21st, so I can pull them together and we can discuss before our next meeting on the 22nd.

Drop me a line if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Nader Ali-Hassan

My contribution is going to be re: media literacy, since it's part of our mission as the Cleveland Social Media Club, and I have rudimentary knowledge of it. I was thinking that it might be good to organize the subject matter for the book by our club's mission.
Hi Nader, I am a content/developmental book editor if you could use the assistance. And I think this is a wonderful idea and so social media-focused.
Hi there! I think I'd like to write from the perspective of setting up your profiles on various social networking sites. Is that along the lines of what you're looking for?

I think that'd be perfect, Renae.

Good morning, George! I'm glad you tweeted about e-book on Twitter. Do I need to submit my topic now or can I mull it over? Or just submit?

Mull it over, but I think several people are planning to submit. The sooner you speak up, the sooner you can reserve your fav topic!

As I commented to @JuneHolley, my working title is "Zen and the Art of Social Media" because of @Mark D Goren's comment in the meeting re: @MattDickman's response to his question—"He sounded like Yoda".

My approach to explaining social media is to try to simplify everything. It's very zen-like, hence the name of the book.

Thoughts?
I liked the title immediately, and understood the concept. LOL@yoda One of my friends calls me yoda and I cringe.

How would you envision the topics? More general? Service specific? Function specific? When I try to introduce friends to social media I usually sit them down in front of a computer and demonstrate how I'm using various services (and why). I'm trying to imagine the best way to break such a concept down into bite size chunks.

I've blogged a bit about social media at http://blog.case.edu/webdev/social_networking/index (some of which may be relevant) though haven't yet written to the totally beginner audience. It sounds like a good project though so I'll try to come up with something that will fit your plan.
I think if anything, I'd like to represent a broad range of approaches to social media. I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all way to teach it, and in a group as diverse as SMC CLE, there's a lot of different styles. I think the best approach is to be yourself!

I'm considering a topic of public vs. private self in social media. (And if they even exist anymore.) Is it possible to keep your friend and coworker networks separate in a Web 2.0 world? How do you transition from your care-free college Facebook days when you start looking for a job? What if potential employers Google you? Etc.

... Is this a topic worth diving into? Or should I think of something else?
