Social Media Club - Cleveland

A community for the champions of Social Media and those seeking to learn.

Having now worked for an agency, a corporation, and a nonprofit, I may have a skewed approach to this, but I think we could discuss nonprofits using SM at our April meeting (details still to be posted as of the time of this writing).

If anyone else has a strong opinion on proper use or examples of nonprofits and SM (is it a great free promo and informational tool or is it a time hog that drains precious resources, etc), let me know. If there is some interest, I'd be willing to put together a deck and lead some discussion of it at the April meeting.

Thanks!

Michael,

I also work for a nonprofit organization and would be interested in such a discussion. If used correctly, I think social media can be a great promotional and relationship-building tool for nonprofits.

Let me know how I can help.

I'm into my third week at a non-profit and would be very interested in discussing how SM can be used in a non-profit.
I would be very interested in joining in this discussion! Being in nonprofit, most of the seminars/meetings in the area involve a lot of people who have no prior experience with SM and it always feels like you're starting from scratch. Having a group of individuals who already have the user end covered would definitely allow for some seriously productive conversation! I'm in!
Having worked for previously and still interacting with the American Red Cross (via SM), I can tell you that they are using SM tools well (IMHO) at the national, chapter and even individual (employee/volunteer/supporter) levels. Chapters and individuals are active on Twitter and Facebook to disseminate information, promote (PR) and garner support.
Thought I'd provide a link as a quick follow up to my comment about the American Red Cross and some of the SM tools they're using: http://redcrossfundraisingtools.wikispaces.com
Thanks to everyone who's replied so far! We'll hopefully be talking about this at the April meeting - if we are, I will get a forum together via this site to gather your thoughts and notes and then send you my proposed presentation/discussion points.

If we don't discuss it in April, it will hopefully be on the agenda for this summer.

I serve on the board. We aim to use more social media in the months and years ahead.
Sounds like a great idea. I had started tinkering with social media while I was at Case Western Reserve so I've got some non-profit experience too. Here's an article about that, Guest Interview with Heidi Cool: How a University Experiments with ....
My wife and I are definitely interested in CleSMC discussions around non profit use of social media. My wife An's career has been in the non profit arena while mine has been strictly corporations, so when we discuss social media, my feeling has been that many non profits stand to gain a lot from utilizing social media tools w/o a lot of the barricades that impede corporate adoption. I'd be interested to hear what other people's take is on this, especially people in the trenches at non profits that are using social media.

Sadly, we won't be able to make it out for the april meeting.
