The subject will be "Social Media and Security". Dominic will be adding additional details. Sounds like this would be a perfect meeting for the office IT department's 'doubting Thomas' . Learning how to keep your social media secure is important.

Yes. I'm a scientist; I began making technical presentations in the mid-90s as a graduate student. I typically make a couple presentations per year to audiences of a few dozen professors and scientists. I use Powerpoint but my style is minimalist - just pictures and text.

Jeff,
I checked http://www.backtype.com/cool and noticed the same problem you mentioned tonight. My most recent comment there is a week old, though I've certainly commented on things more recently (including one immediately before I met up with your folks at the Americano tonight. )

I just went to their blog at http://blog.backtype.com/ and noticed a lot of posts where they talk about new services they're supporting. For instance they recently added Mahalo, a few weeks back they added Digg, etc. So I wonder if that means they are adding various platforms as they go. Not sure how they do self-hosted blogs. I'll see what I else I can find out.

p.s. They also have a page where you can submit blogs that they're missing at http://www.backtype.com/addblogs, and they're now a FriendFeed Service so you can add them and pull in your comments to FriendFeed if you want. I'm going to go do that now.

Author Timothy Ferriss discusses Twitter

http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2009/02/25/how-to-use-twitter-without-twitter-owning-you-5-tips/

Ferriss shows some tough love, along the lines of "making difficult choices". He also has some interesting implicit guidelines, like "I didn't want to have another inbox."

Last night's Tomatoless Chipotle Chili

Here's a link to the full recipe:

http://myfuturepast.blogspot.com/2009/02/tomatoless-chipotle-chili.html

Once I tasted it last night, I wasn't very happy with it. It was hotter than usual, with less depth of flavor. The recipe says to use a bottle of stout, which I didn't; I used Lagunitas Brewing Co's Brown Shugga Ale instead. I'll go back to stout in the future. Also, in the past I've made this with beef; I expected pork to be better but I'm not sure.

Make sure you use plenty of the adobo… Continue

The Happiness Project: Why Facebook Can Make You Happier

Gretchen Rubin runs a great blog, The Happiness Project, and has recently begun writing for Slate. Here she takes on a topic that's important to the Cleveland SMC, Facebook:

I've been talking to people on the Internet for a long time and heard every criticism. Gretchen addresses them, puts forward a theory to rebut them, and backs it up with concrete examples.

Guacamole recipe - reposted from my blog

Some folks at the Holiday Cookie Exchange Party (beautiful house, Dave) asked for my guacamole recipe. I actually made a variation on the one I posted before. I added garlic and ground cumin, and I made it in a food processor instead of mashing it by hand.

I started by trimming two bunches of green onions, seeding two jalapenos, and cutting the stems off of most of a bunch of cilantro. I processed th… Continue
